The Things
As business IT professionals, we have seen “things”; “things” that would horrify you.
“Things” you would never want to encounter in your own company.
We’re talking about security breaches, data theft, and file corruption. That has brought businesses to their knees; no matter their sizes: small, large, or global.
As the business owner or manager, these are THE THINGS that you don’t want it to happen.
Because it only takes one click from a well-meaning member of your team on a bad link. Your business is standing still.
You do not need us to tell you that data loss can lead to a massive loss of confidence from your clients.
The time and cost of rectifying are phenomenal.
Do you know the best-kept secret among Security Tools is “Training”?
Yes, the Cybersecurity Training.
Though it may sound simple, you’d be surprised to learn how many businesses do not know the importance of company-wide security awareness.
Of course, you should have an IT partner protecting you with security products. It protects you and your staff without inconveniencing you while you’re trying to work.
In our view, “Cybersecurity Training” is something every business should invest in.
Everyone in your business and your vendors should regularly take part in formal data security training.
Solid cybersecurity culture is one of the best ways to keep your business safe from the increasingly sophisticated threats out there.
Because hackers use automated tools to look for vulnerabilities in every business all the time, your business is included.
Remember, it only takes one click of your team members to let in the hackers.
“But my people are savvy professionals. They’re not going to fall for a scam.”
We hear this often.
And yes, your people are savvy, but so are cybercriminals.
Cybercrime is evolving. And there is always another scammer or hacker around the corner waiting to take advantage of a technology flaw or changing landscape of how we do business.
Your business can never be too prepared.
For example, phishing. You’ve heard of that, right?
But do you and your team know all about it?
Phishing is a standard tool cybercriminal uses to extract login credentials or credit card details by email, telephone, or even text message.
Today, phishing emails are far more convincing. They often claim to come from someone credible, such as your bank, a client, or even your vendors.
They’ll ask you to click a link to update your details or change a password. But instead of being taken to a legitimate website, it will take you to their own with very hard to detect misspells.
And once you entered your details, you gave them your login credentials.
Other times, you’re sent an attachment – again, seemingly from someone you know – which, when opened, will install malware on your device (and/or across your whole network.)
Downloads and executions allow criminals to steal data or deny access to your information (that’s called crypto locking or Ransomware).
Then there is spearfishing, the phishing aims at specific individuals.
To cybercriminals’ advantage, they spend time learning a lot of information about your company and you (your name, role, company information, etc.).
If the target is someone at the top, this is called whaling or CEO fraud.
Attackers target people at the top as they have access to the most sensitive data. A successful “whaling” gives enormous financial gains to cybercriminals.
What about pharming? Which asks you to take action on what looks like a familiar website.
Except if you look very carefully, the website address is slightly incorrect. The criminals manage to divert traffic going to the actual website. It is hard to detect. Any information entered on the scam site goes to the criminals.
Security Training improves the ability to recognize the tiny little clues that give the fake sites away.
Don’t forget about the Spoofing, it is an email pretending to be from someone you may know. And it often asks you to go to a link for more information.
This type of scam often downloads malware or ransomware.
Beyond the Emails
Then we have smashing , which is phishing with text messages (SMS) . And vishing , which is phishing on the phone or voice phishing.
It carries out when you receive a phone call from a blocked or unusual number, the caller will pretend to be someone or from somewhere familiar and ask you to carry out actions or make a payment.
You can leverage a Proper Cybersecurity Training to prevent costly Disasters and Outages.
You and some of your staff may hear and learn cybersecurity bits and pieces from the news; however, Cybersecurity Training covers complete hacker techniques with practical case Practices.
There are plenty of other ways that cybercriminals will attack your business. Businesses like yours are prime targets for cybercriminals. A cyber-criminal doesn’t care who clicks at their link, just as long as someone does.
As you can see, it takes only one small oversight of one person in your company to expose your business to an unanticipated threat.
Cybersecurity training is a relevant skill. Invest and engage your staff in protecting your company. It is a cost-effective motivational tool for your company.
