Why do I care about securing my website?

If you are conducting eCommerce transactions or collecting sensitive information such as medical or banking data, you must secure your website. The lack of proper protocols puts your business and your client at risk. One in five small enterprises are victimized due to insufficient internet safety.

  • Financial costs
  • Data breaches
  • Brand and reputation after-effects

What makes a Website “Secure”?

Website security has many aspects, but it starts by securing it with an SSL certificate. It is a standard security technology that establishes an encrypted connection between a web server and a browser (client). The URL is identified with “HTTPS” instead of “HTTP”.

  • SSL certificate authenticates the identity of a web server and establishes an encrypted conversation between a Brower (user) and the Website (server). If the transmission is intercepted, the information can still be kept confidential.

In 2016 Google updated their Chrome browser to explicitly identify sites that do not use HTTPS as “Unsecure”. You may have noticed lock icons indicating when a site is secure in most common browsers such as Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, Safari in desktop or mobile devices.

Since July 2018, Chrome not only marked standard HTTP sites as “insecure”, in some cases, it will not allow overrides to connect to an unsafe site.
